Prof. Dr. Martin Weissenborn
Martin Weissenborn began his academic journey in Chemistry at Kiel University (CAU). During a year abroad at Lund University in Sweden, he completed his Master of Science, conducting research in the groups of Ola Wendt (cross-coupling chemistry) and Ulf Ellervik (glycosciences). He then returned to Kiel to complete his Diploma thesis under the supervision of Thisbe Lindhorst, specializing in glycosciences.
In 2009, supported by a Marie Curie Fellowship, he moved to the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology for his doctoral studies with Sabine Flitsch. His PhD research focused on the functionalization and analysis of self-assembling monolayers.
Following his doctorate, he joined Bernhard Hauer’s group at the University of Stuttgart as a postdoctoral researcher. There, his work centered on biocatalysis, specifically investigating P450 monooxygenases and carbene transfer chemistry. After a research stay at ETH Zurich with Donald Hilvert, he was appointed in 2016 to a W1 Junior Professorship for Bioorganic Chemistry—a joint appointment between Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB).
In 2023, Martin Weissenborn was appointed W2 Professor of Bioorganic Chemistry.

Postdocs
Dr. Simon KoopmeinersPostdoc Room: D.D.10 +49 (0) 345 55 21667 simon.Koopmeiners@chemie.uni-halle.de Simon studied biochemistry in Bielefeld, finishing his PhD in late 2024. His research focuses on applying enzymes for biocatalysis. Therefore, he specialized in the structural and functional characterization of enzymes, as well as their optimization through enzyme engineering. In early 2025, Simon joined the Weissenborn group as a postdoctoral researcher. In his research project, he investigates the enzymatic synthesis of sugar replacements and food additives by valorizing sugar production residuals. As a sweet tooth himself, he is both professionally and personally intrigued by working with "sugar-eating" enzymes. In his free time, he enjoys going swimming. |

PhD Students
Bonnie WinterDoktorandin Room D.D.10 +49 (0) 345 55 21667 bonnie.winter@chemie.uni-halle.de Bonnie studied Chemistry at the University of Leipzig, before joining the Weissenborn group to pursue her interest in enzyme engineering. Her research focuses on converting bulky substrates, ranging from "new-to-nature" cyclic sesquiterpenes oxidized by unspecific peroxygenases to the mycotoxin Deoxynivalenol detoxified with Glutathione S-transferases, ideally predicting the outcomes in silico using docking studies. Outside the lab, Bonnie enjoys taking a walk at the Saale river when the mountains are too far away, and she is always up for a football or bouldering session. |
